Statement

Since my third year of undergraduate study I have focused primarily on taxidermy and its multifarious and conflicting properties. I have since broadened my scope to include the institutional and literal frames that surround it: the diorama and the museum. The museum diorama, with its stuffed animals and illusionary realism of both scenic accuracy and lifelike imitation became a preoccupation throughout my final year. Through this representational device I have attempted to determine, using a combination of photography and animation, what is truly "natural" today, particularly in relation to past and present representations of animals. Most recently, I have become more enamored with the tactile qualities of fur and skin, and the effect of combining these separate and yet indivisible elements. Another influential force has been my ongoing investigation into where the division exists between humans and "non-human animals" as well as the notion of "becoming animal" both in the literal and philosophical sense.
